Meet Mahash Prasai, or as the locals call him, “Max”—the ultimate Aussie success story. Landing in Australia in 2008 with just $135 in his pocket, this international student from Nepal was ready to take on whatever challenges came his way. Fast forward to today, and Max’s supermarket, Country Fresh Rockdale, is not only a thriving business but also a hub for Rockdale’s vibrant multicultural community.
Max didn’t have it easy. Over the years, he hustled through jobs as a cleaner, kitchen hand, delivery driver, and even worked in corrective services. But with hard work and a dream, he finally took the leap in 2015, opening his own business. Like many small business owners, he faced plenty of struggles, but he powered through. Today, Country Fresh Rockdale stands proudly on King Street, offering products from all over the world and bringing a slice of home to Rockdale’s diverse residents.
The supermarket’s motto, “Serving all over the world,” is more than just a tagline. From Nepalese momos and Korean kimchi to Greek moussaka, Max’s store caters to Rockdale’s multicultural community with an international flair that the big chains just can’t match. And it doesn’t stop there! Max has provided jobs for more than 50 local international students and migrants, giving many a start in their new country.
Recently, NSW Premier Chris Minns and Rockdale MP Steve Kamper visited Max’s store to officially celebrate its recent refurbishment—a proud moment for Max and a sign of the impact he’s had on the community. The event was a gathering of dignitaries, including the Consulate General of Nepal and community leaders, all there to honor the remarkable journey Max has taken and his dedication to Rockdale.
Beyond business, Max’s heart lies in giving back. He founded Vision for Motivation, a not-for-profit organization that supports international students and new migrants. Through this initiative, Max has helped over 5,000 students find jobs, housing, and a sense of belonging in the St George area. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he provided free food and essentials to international students left stranded without support.
Max may have started with $135, but he’s built a legacy of resilience, compassion, and community spirit. His story is a reminder that it’s not where you start, but how much heart you bring to the journey. Stop by Country Fresh Rockdale and say hello to Max—he’s more than just a business owner; he’s a community hero.
