At 90.1 NBC FM, we’re committed to raising awareness on issues that impact our community, and today we’re focusing on a significant step forward in the fight against domestic and family violence in New South Wales.

The Premier recently announced a powerful new measure aimed at protecting victims of domestic violence: starting today, serious domestic violence offenders on bail will be electronically monitored using GPS technology. This initiative will allow corrective services to track offenders and notify police if bail conditions are breached, enhancing safety for victims and their families.

In the Premier’s statement, he expressed a deep concern for the rate of domestic violence in our state. Too many lives have been lost, and too many families have been torn apart by these crimes. It’s a reality that the government is working to change. This new electronic monitoring program aims to strengthen the state’s protective measures, providing around-the-clock surveillance on alleged offenders. If a restricted area is breached, like a residential address, school, workplace, or even a suburb, NSW Police will be notified immediately, allowing them to take swift action.

This latest move builds on previous efforts by the NSW Government to curb domestic violence. Earlier this year, bail laws for serious domestic violence charges were significantly tightened, requiring alleged offenders to “show cause” as to why they should not be detained. This makes it more challenging for offenders to receive bail, and now, for those who do, this GPS tracking system offers an additional layer of security.

The Premier emphasized that everyone deserves to feel safe in their own home, a right that unfortunately isn’t always upheld. For those who have had that right taken from them, these new measures aim to help restore a sense of safety and security.

We know there is still more work to be done. The NSW Government is committed to doing everything possible to prevent further violence in our community, and at 90.1 NBC FM, we’ll continue to keep you informed on these vital issues. We stand with all victim-survivors and will always support efforts to make NSW a safer place for everyone.
